You don’t need 500 citation sites. Most Indian local businesses need 8 core listings (Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business, Mappls, Justdial, Sulekha, Facebook and LinkedIn) plus the 3–5 directories their own industry’s customers use. That’s 11–13 listings. The long “free listing sites” lists are mostly link farms that Google already discounts.
What is a local citation, and why does it matter at all?

A local citation is any place online that shows your business name, address and phone number. Google Business Profile is one. So is your Justdial page, your IndiaMART catalogue and your Practo profile.
Citations matter for two reasons. First, real customers find you on them. Second, Google says local ranking depends on relevance, distance and prominence, and that prominence includes “info like how many websites link to your business” (Google Business Profile Help). Map apps and AI assistants also read these sources to check your details.
Notice what Google doesn’t say. It never says “more directories, higher ranking”. That gap is where the 500-site lists live.
Why did volume citation building stop working?
Because Google stopped counting links from junk directories. Its spam policies name “low-quality directory or bookmark site links” as link spam (Google Search Central spam policies). In its December 2022 link spam update, Google said it was using SpamBrain, its AI spam-prevention system, “to neutralize the impact of unnatural links” (Google Search Central Blog).
Neutralised means zero, not negative. That’s the part people miss. Most of the submissions in a “500 sites” package aren’t hurting your rankings. They just aren’t doing anything, and you paid for them.
They do cost you in other ways:
- NAP drift. Every listing is one more copy of your name, address and phone you can’t update later. Change your number and 200 pages keep showing the old one.
- Spam. In my experience, a burst of low-quality listings is followed by a burst of sales calls about “premium listing upgrades”.
- False confidence. A report with 500 “live links” looks like work. It hides the fact that your Google profile has a handful of reviews and no photos.
What does “worth your time” mean for a directory?

In my experience, a directory earns a place on the list only if it passes at least one of these tests:
- Real people search it. Customers use it to find a business like yours, like Justdial for a plumber or Practo for a dentist.
- It feeds a map or assistant. Apple Maps, Bing, Mappls and Google all show business data to people who never visit your website.
- It’s the category standard. Buyers in your industry expect to see you there, so leaving it out looks odd. That’s IndiaMART for a manufacturer, Clutch for an agency.
- It verifies you. It checks by phone OTP, postcard, document or a real review system, so the data carries weight.
Fail all four and it’s a link farm, however high its “DA” looks.
Which directories should every local business in India be on?
These eight apply to almost everyone. Do them in this order.
| # | Directory | Why it’s here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Google Business Profile | Google Search and Maps. Your source of truth. |
| 2 | Bing Places for Business | Bing search and Bing Maps |
| 3 | Apple Business (formerly Apple Business Connect) | Place cards on Apple Maps and iPhone |
| 4 | Mappls (MapmyIndia) | Indian map platform with its own add/claim-a-place flow |
| 5 | Justdial | People still search it by category and locality |
| 6 | Sulekha | Service enquiries, especially home services and coaching |
| 7 | Facebook Page | Hours, phone, reviews; many customers check it first |
| 8 | LinkedIn Page | For B2B and professional services, it’s the first credibility check |
Apple replaced Business Connect with a single platform called Apple Business on 14 April 2026, and Apple lists India under “Brand and Location Management” (Apple Newsroom, Apple Support). Old guides still say “Business Connect”. The login moved, but it’s the same job.
Before you add anything, make sure your details match across these eight. My NAP consistency guide for Indian businesses covers the shop-number and old-landline problems that trip most people up.
Which industry directories matter for my business?
Pick only your own row. A dentist on IndiaMART is noise.
| # | Directory | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 9 | IndiaMART | Manufacturers, wholesalers, B2B suppliers |
| 10 | TradeIndia | Manufacturers, wholesalers, B2B suppliers |
| 11 | ExportersIndia | Exporters and B2B suppliers |
| 12 | Practo | Doctors, dentists, clinics |
| 13 | Lybrate | Doctors and clinics |
| 14 | Zomato | Restaurants, cafés, cloud kitchens |
| 15 | Swiggy | Restaurants and cloud kitchens |
| 16 | magicpin | Restaurants, salons, retail stores |
| 17 | UrbanPro | Tutors, coaching institutes, trainers |
| 18 | Shiksha | Colleges, institutes, higher-education courses |
| 19 | Collegedunia | Colleges and institutes |
| 20 | MagicBricks | Builders, brokers, real-estate agents |
| 21 | 99acres | Builders, brokers, real-estate agents |
| 22 | Housing.com | Builders, brokers, real-estate agents |
| 23 | MakeMyTrip | Hotels, homestays, resorts |
| 24 | Tripadvisor | Hotels, restaurants, tour operators |
| 25 | Booking.com | Hotels, homestays, resorts |
| 26 | WedMeGood | Wedding venues, photographers, planners, makeup artists |
| 27 | Clutch | Agencies, IT and software services |
| 28 | GoodFirms | Agencies, IT and software services |
| 29 | CarDekho | Car dealers |
| 30 | CarWale | Car dealers |
A few of these are partner platforms rather than free listings. Zomato, Swiggy and the travel sites onboard you as a seller, with their own contracts and commissions. Read the terms before you sign, because the listing is the least of what you’re agreeing to.
If you run a clinic or a coaching institute, my guides to local SEO for clinics and local SEO for coaching institutes show how these vertical listings fit alongside your Google profile.
How do I spot one of the 200 directories that aren’t worth it?
Ask four questions before you submit anything.
- Did it go live without any check? No OTP, no email confirmation, no review. Then nobody else is checked either.
- Would a customer ever search here? Search your category and city on the site. If the results are empty or stuffed with unrelated businesses, no one is using it.
- Is it mostly outbound links and ads? Pages that exist to link out match Google’s description of link spam.
- Is it asking for a reciprocal link or a fee to “approve” you? That’s a link scheme, not a directory.
Two or more “yes” answers and I skip it.
Does paying for a Justdial or IndiaMART plan improve my Google ranking?

Here’s the claim I expect other SEOs to push back on. A paid Justdial or IndiaMART plan buys visibility inside Justdial or IndiaMART. In my experience it doesn’t buy Google ranking.
Google’s local ranking signals are relevance, distance and prominence. A higher position inside another company’s search results isn’t one of them. The free listing gives Google the same name, address and phone as the paid one.
That doesn’t make paid plans a waste. If a platform sends you real enquiries, pay for it as a lead source and judge it on cost per enquiry. Just don’t buy it as an SEO move, and don’t let anyone sell it to you as one.
Should I pay someone to build citations for me?
For most single-location businesses, no. Eight core listings plus three to five industry ones is a weekend of work for an owner with their documents ready.
Paying someone makes sense when you have several branches, a rebrand, a move, or old listings someone else controls. It also makes sense when you’d rather spend the weekend on the business. That’s the kind of clean-up I do inside my local SEO services. I’ll say it plainly, though: if a provider quotes you by the number of submissions, walk away.
Citations are also one of the smaller levers. Reviews, categories and your Google Business Profile usually matter more, and my breakdown of map pack ranking factors in India shows where citations sit among them. For the wider picture, read my guide to local SEO in India.

What are local citation sites in India?
Local citation sites are platforms that list your business name, address and phone number. In India the most useful are Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business, Mappls, Justdial, Sulekha, Facebook and LinkedIn, plus industry directories such as IndiaMART for manufacturers, Practo for clinics and UrbanPro for tutors. Real customers or map apps use these sites.
Are free business directory sites in India still worth submitting to?
Only a small number are. Google’s spam policies class low-quality directory links as link spam, and its 2022 SpamBrain update was built to neutralise unnatural links. Submitting to hundreds of free directories mostly produces listings nobody reads and copies of your details you can’t update. Stick to directories real customers search or that feed maps.
How many citations does a local business in India need?
For most single-location businesses, 11 to 13: eight core listings (Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business, Mappls, Justdial, Sulekha, Facebook, LinkedIn) plus three to five directories specific to your industry. Multi-location businesses need the same set for each location. Beyond that, extra listings rarely add value and make your details harder to keep consistent.
Does a paid Justdial listing help my Google ranking?
In my experience, no. A paid Justdial plan improves your position inside Justdial, not in Google. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, and the free listing passes the same name, address and phone details as the paid one. Judge a paid plan by the enquiries it sends, not as an SEO investment.
Should I disavow links from spammy directories I was submitted to?
Usually not. Google’s Search Console Help says most sites don’t need the disavow tool because Google can assess which links to trust. Google suggests it only when you have a large number of spammy links and they have caused, or are likely to cause, a manual action. Focus on fixing wrong details on listings customers actually see.
Where should I start today?
Take ten minutes. Open the eight core directories in the first table and search for your business on each. Note which ones you’ve claimed, which exist without you, and which show a wrong phone number. That short list is your plan. It matters more than any 500-site package.
