GEO for Asset Management Companies: Turn Investor Education Into ChatGPT Citations

Education Into ChatGPT Citations

GEO for asset management companies starts with content you already fund: investor education. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews cite neutral, factual explainers when people ask investing questions, which is exactly what SEBI-safe education is. Most AMCs keep that material in PDFs, videos and campaign microsites that AI engines struggle to read and quote.

Every AMC I have looked at has more citable material than it thinks. Seminar decks, explainer videos, glossaries and fund manager notes already passed compliance and already answer what investors ask AI assistants.

The problem is format. A 40-slide PDF, a video with no transcript, or a microsite that went dark after three months does not answer “what is a balanced advantage fund” in a way an engine can lift.

For a CMO, this changes the business case for ChatGPT visibility. You are not asking for a new content budget, only to make existing investment visible where investors now start their research.

Why is investor education the content AI engines cite for investing questions?

Because AI engines answering money questions look for sources that explain without selling. Investor education is written to inform, carries risk disclosures and avoids return promises, which makes it safe for an engine to summarise and cite.

The mechanism is retrieval. Asked “SIP or lump sum” or “who is a PMS suitable for”, the engine finds pages that state an answer plainly, then summarises and cites them. A fund page urging you to invest does not answer that. An education page does.

Investing is high-stakes, so engines give balanced answers with trade-offs. Content written to SEBI’s not-misleading standard has the same shape; performance-led content rarely fits.

Here is the claim a competent competitor would argue with: an AMC’s investor education archive is worth more for AI visibility than its entire product marketing calendar. The counter is that education does not sell schemes. True, but in AI answers the brand that explains the category is the brand investors meet first.

What investor education content does an AMC already have?

Usually more than marketing has catalogued. Between mandated investor education, fund manager commentary and distributor training, large AMCs hold a deep archive of compliance-approved assets.

SEBI requires mutual funds to set aside at least 2 basis points of daily net assets every year for investor education and awareness initiatives, according to a SEBI letter to AMFI dated 8 January 2016. The letter says half is pooled with AMFI; the rest funds each AMC’s own education work, which produces content every year.

Typical assets I find in an inventory:

  • Investor awareness seminar decks and recordings, often in Hindi and regional languages
  • Explainer videos on YouTube or social channels, usually without transcripts
  • Glossaries, calculators and “how mutual funds work” sections
  • Monthly fund manager commentary, mostly in PDF
  • Distributor training material that explains categories plainly
  • Campaign microsites that were built for one season and then abandoned

Each answers questions investors ask AI assistants. Few are in a form those assistants can use.

How do you turn PDFs, videos and campaigns into pages AI engines can cite?

Republish each asset as an HTML page on your main domain: one question per page, answer first, with a named author and a review date. That turns a document an engine might skim into a page it can quote.

The conversion steps that matter most:

  1. One question, one page. Split a deck into the questions it answers. “What is asset allocation” and “how often should I rebalance” become separate pages.
  2. Answer in the first paragraph. State the answer in two or three sentences, then explain. AI engines often quote a single paragraph.
  3. Transcribe every video. Publish the transcript as edited HTML text beside the video, not as an auto-caption file.
  4. Name the expert and date it. A named fund manager or education head, with a “last reviewed” date, signals maintained content.
  5. Move campaign content home. Bring microsite content onto your main domain and redirect the old URLs, so the authority builds in one place.
  6. Keep the disclosures in the text. The risk statements compliance approved should sit in the HTML, not only in a footer image.

First, check AI crawlers can reach the pages. OpenAI’s documentation separates OAI-SearchBot, which surfaces sites in ChatGPT search, from GPTBot, used for training; Perplexity’s describes PerplexityBot similarly. Google says AI Overviews have no extra technical requirements beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet.

This conversion and access work is where my AEO/GEO service begins, and it is the core of GEO for mutual funds. AEO/GEO means answer engine optimisation and generative engine optimisation: making content easy for AI Overviews and AI assistants to find, understand and cite. For leadership, my explainer on the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO is a useful pre-read.

Who competes with your AMC for these citations?

Regulators, industry bodies, news sites, aggregators and creators. Each wins for a different reason and needs a different response.

SituationWhat to doWhy
AI answers cite the regulator’s investor website for basic definitionsDo not compete on definitions; answer the next question, such as suitability, costs and how to chooseEngines trust regulators for definitions; you add value one step further
An industry awareness campaign is cited for “are mutual funds safe” type questionsPublish category-specific explainers the campaign does not coverIndustry content stays generic by design, leaving specific questions open
News sites are cited for “best fund” questionsPublish neutral “how to evaluate a fund in this category” guides instead of rankingsYou cannot ethically rank your own schemes; you can teach evaluation
Aggregator platforms are cited for scheme factsPut your own scheme facts in dated HTML on each scheme pageThe primary source should be the easiest to read
Creators are cited for vernacular questionsRepublish your regional-language seminar content as properly translated pagesFew AMCs answer in Hindi or regional languages, so the gap is real

Running your top questions through each engine shows where AI search for mutual funds already favours someone else. How do SEBI rules affect republishing investor education online?

Republished content is still communication from the AMC, so it stays within SEBI’s advertising framework. Treat every converted page as needing the same review as the original asset. This is not legal advice.

The SEBI (Mutual Funds) Regulations, 1996 define advertisement broadly, covering all forms of communication issued by or on behalf of an AMC or mutual fund that may influence investors. They require conformity with SEBI’s Advertisement Code and say advertisement material must not be misleading or contain incorrect or false statements.

Splitting a deck can change meaning: the risk statement on slide 40 may vanish from the page quoting slide 12. Agree that each page carries its own disclosures.

Creator partnerships need the same care. A SEBI circular dated 22 October 2024 says regulated entities and their agents must not associate with people who give investment advice or recommendations, or make claims of returns or performance, unless SEBI permits them. People engaged in investor education are excluded, provided they do neither.

What goes wrong when enterprises try this?

Large AMCs make a simple idea slow. These are the failure modes I see most.

  1. Approval delays. Compliance re-reviews every converted page from scratch. Agree a lighter path for unchanged text.
  2. Central versus local ownership. Investor education is often run by a separate team or agency from digital marketing. Their assets never reach the website team.
  3. Agency handoffs. Seminar, video and SEO agencies each own a piece, and nobody is briefed to connect them.
  4. Vendor tools. Video platforms and PDF libraries hold content in formats crawlers handle poorly, and security vendors may block AI crawlers by default.
  5. Measurement mismatch. Education reports attendance and reach; digital reports traffic. Neither measures citations.

When does this approach not apply?

It matters less for new AMCs with little education content yet. They must create the material first.

It also matters less for PMS providers whose clients come almost entirely through RMs and referrals, with no independent research.

And it will not overcome a weak product story. AI engines also summarise what independent sources say about your schemes. Frequently asked questions

What is GEO for asset management companies?

GEO for asset management companies means making a mutual fund or PMS brand’s content easy for ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews to find, understand and cite. In practice it usually starts with existing investor education: converting PDFs, videos and campaign material into answer-first HTML pages, keeping disclosures intact, and allowing AI search crawlers to reach them.

Can AMCs republish investor education content as blog pages?

Yes, but the republished pages remain communication from the AMC and fall within SEBI’s advertising framework for mutual funds. Each page should carry its own risk disclosures and avoid misleading statements or return promises. Splitting long material into pages can change context, so compliance review is still needed. This is general information, not legal advice.

Why does ChatGPT not cite our investor education videos?

AI assistants mostly retrieve and quote text. A video without a published transcript gives them little to read, and auto-generated captions are often inaccurate. Publishing an edited transcript as HTML beside the video, with a clear title and an answer-first opening, gives AI engines text they can quote and attribute to your brand.

Should AMCs publish investor education in Hindi and regional languages?

Where you already run regional-language seminars or campaigns, yes. Many investors in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities ask questions in Hindi or their own language, and fewer brands answer them well. Properly translated pages on separate URLs give AI engines a credible vernacular source. Machine-translated copies without review risk errors in regulated content.

How do we show leadership that GEO is working?

Track a fixed set of investor questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google every month, and record whether your brand is cited, mentioned or absent. Report citation share beside traffic and leads, because AI answers often influence investors without sending a click. Over time, rising citation share alongside steady branded search is the clearest evidence.
